THE GRADES/DIVISIONS
The are three different grades at Sandvolley:
Open- The highest grade, full rules apply.
Mixed A- Some modified rules
Mixed B- More modified rules.

THE SANDVOLLEY RULES

There are way too many rules to go into in detail but here are some that will help with consistency.
DO NOT TOUCH THE NET

OPEN GRADE

SERVING: Whole body behind base line but within side-lines.
Ball must leave the supporting hand before being struck over the net. (ie: no football hand-passes).
The ball can touch the net but must go over and land in court to be judged in.
On the line is in.

SETTING: Setting is not allowed off a serve or a “free-ball”*
When setting the hands must contact and release the ball simultaneously otherwise a call of “two hits” or “double contact” will be adjudged (often a spinning ball is an indication of a double contact.
When setting over the net the ball must go in a direction inline with your shoulders either forwards or backwards.

DIGGING: When digging your hands must be touching at some point. Most people make this obvious by overlapping or interlocking their hands.
You can not play a ball below the waist with an open hand, this is called a “carry”.

SPIKING: The ball must be struck, not thrown. You should hear a slapping sound.
The direction of the ball can not be altered by using just fingertips like a football ruckman (but you can poke the ball with stiff fingers).

BLOCKING: You can reach over the net if the other has used all three shots.
An individual can play the ball twice in a row if the first shot was a block.
The block counts as a team hit and leaves you only two more shots to get the ball over the net.

MIXED A+B

The rules are the same except for setting. In mixed A you can not set a serve but you can set a “free-ball”*.
Sets can be spinning a little when setting it up for a spiker.
In mixed B you can set any ball and when setting it up for a spiker it can be really spinning.

*A “free-ball” is a shot which goes over the net with loop. The opposite of this is a “hard-driven” ball which only has a downward trajectory.
